Gifts to Missionaries . . . Some Guidelines

(adapted from information provided by MAF @ www.maf.org )

(These are guidelines! You should check with your specific missionary to make sure how they would best be served by your gift.)

Many of you have asked how to send cards, letters, packages and money gifts to missionaries for Christmas [this would apply at other times as well]. We hope the following information will be helpful.

Cards and letters should be sent directly to the location where your missionary is serving. Allow several weeks for Christmas mail to be delivered overseas.

Before you send a package overseas, ask your missionary about customs' policies in his or her country of service [they can get stuck with various duties and/or fees].

The safest way to send monetary gifts is through the missionaries sending church or group. It is not recommended sending money or checks overseas through the mail.

Here are two options:

  1. For tax-deductible ministry support gifts to missionaries, make your check payable to their sending church or group and include a note to that effect. They will apply your gift to their ministry support account.

  2. For personal non-tax-deductible gifts to missionaries at Christmas, holidays, or other special occasions, make your check payable to their sending church or group with a note indicating their names and the purpose of your gift. It will then be deposited directly into their personal account and they will be notified of your gift.

Christmas is also an ideal time to begin or increase, as the Lord allows, your spiritual and financial partnership with your missionary. What better way to say you care?
