The Persecuted Church . . . The Worst
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sudan / Africa The country of Sudan is perhaps the greatest offender of the Christian faith in the world. The northern government, since 1983, has declared an Islamic holy war, also known as a "Jihad' on the people living in southern Sudan. Many in the south who are Christians are now suffering severe persecution in the form of churches being destroyed, children taken into slavery, woman being raped and turned into concubines, while the men are often times butchered to death in front of their families, by the militia troops who attack their villages. The atrocities taking place in this African country are unmatched in all the world. Saudi Arabia / Middle East This is the most strict of all the Islamic states and therefore it is also one of the least evangelized nations on the planet. Home to Mecca, the holiest city for any Muslim, this regime has no tolerance for any other faiths, especially on proclaiming Jesus as God. Any nation openly confessing Christ as their Savior, could face the death sentence and the religious police known as the "Mutawwa" use any means possible to enforce these policies. China / Asia This is by far the largest nation on the globe and contains probably the fastest growing body of believers as well. The persecution at times can be tremendous, as the expanding Christian population suffers under the wrath of this atheistic and communist government. A famine for Bibles still exists and the church leadership are most often targeted with imprisonment and beatings. Iran / Middle East In 1994, three main church leaders were shockingly assassinated. Since that time, the followers of Jesus have boldly continued to share their faith. However, to win a Muslim to Christ, could cost you your life in this Islamic republic. Somalia / Africa Since 1995, lawlessness has reigned among the people and authorities have randomly instituted various Islamic laws against Christians. This brings hatred, violence and unwarranted acts of aggression towards those who are following Christ. North Korea / Asia Since the death of its longtime socialist leader Kim II Sung, there have been no signs of easing the pressure against the church in this communist country. Unlike South Korea which ranks at the top of the list for religious freedom, their northern counterparts are still the most closed communist nation left in the world. Travel for most foreigners is strictly controlled and therefore only slight information is available concerning the underground church. Egypt / Middle East Though the largest number of Christians in the Middle East are found here, the actual growth rate is very small. This is due to the increased efforts of the radical Muslim fundamentalists, who are trying to convert this nation entirely over to the strict Islamic law called "Sharia." Vietnam / Asia This still communist country waivers in the midst of change. Over the last several years, great strides have been made to normalize relations with other governments, that were once deemed as enemies. Meanwhile, reports of police harassment, interrogations and threats are still a way of life for the Christian leadership and pastors. The tribal highlands, have also been a favorite target of the authorities in order to control the growth of the church. Pakistan / Afghanistan This could be perhaps the most dangerous region in the world to be a born-again Christian. Strict codes of Islam have led to arrest, imprisonment and other acts of violence, to be carried out towards the believers who survive in this region. False charges of blasphemy against Islam, is usually the tactic used to trap Christians. This has been the case of several innocent followers, who were punished for crimes they did not commit. ~~~~~~~~~
